History of Stearns & Foster
In 1846, George Sullivan Stearns, a Maryland-born businessman and industrialist, and Seth Cutter Foster, a Kentucky native and purveyor of cotton goods, partnered to create cotton wadding and other cotton-based products and upholstery for horse carriages. While mattresses were not first in mind, their focus on luxurious comfort and top-quality was there from the start. It wasn’t long before they began manufacturing the first Stearns & Foster mattresses and selling them to high-end hotels.
After nearly 150 years, Stearns & Foster merged with another trusted and iconic mattress brand, Sealy (formerly Ohio Mattress Company). Today, the Tempur Sealy family continues their founders’ commitment to innovation, quality and comfort.
